Course Description

This 6 hour course teaches officers the proper use O.C. Spray in situations involving aggressive animals. This course is designed for law enforcement, animal control, and professionals who may encounter aggressive animals as part of their daily duties.

Course Topics

Training Block A: Introduction to Oleoresin Capsicum Spray

  • Component of O.C. Spray
  • Effective v. ineffective sprays against animals
  • Liability considerations for using O.C. Spray

Training Block B: Officer Safety

  • Reactionary gaps with animals
  • Physiological and psychological responses to O.C. Spray
  • Proper target areas

Training Block C: Deploying O.C. Spray

  • Types of O.C. spray patterns
  • Proper decontamination procedures
  • Reporting and documentation requirements

Course Prerequisites

This course is restricted to law enforcement and animal care and control professionals who are employed by a municipal, county, state, or federal agency that is authorized to conduct chemical capture and immobilization operations as part of their regular duties.

Completion Standards

Students must attend all 6 hours of the course, demonstrate proficiency in safety, deployment, decontamination procedures, and pass a comprehensive written examination with a score of 75% or better.

Training Credits and Limitations

This course satisfies the training requirement of the Tactical Animal Control Officer Certification course’s O.C. Spray Training Block, which also applies to the 110-hour AACIS certified Animal Control Officer certification course.
